For 40 years VicHealth has provided independent and innovative health promotion programs that put the health of Victorians first. We know that without proper investment in health prevention, life expectancy decreases and ambulance and hospital demand skyrockets .

VicHealth currently operates as a standalone public health foundation, which allows it to make health decisions without being influenced by powerful lobbies that can pressure governments.

In challenging political landscapes dominated by powerful tobacco, alcohol and junk food lobbies, VicHealth has remained an independent first line of defence, delivering essential prevention programs and research that have changed Victoria’s health for the better. 

But the state government is siding with the harmful lobbies. Recently it was announced that the government plans to absorb VicHealth into a government department, ending its decades long independence.

This will mean the end of VicHealth as we know it and lead to poorer health outcomes for Victorians. 

VicHealth’s independent decision-making has allowed it to:

  • Champion life-saving tobacco control reforms, 

  • Be a world leader in protecting young people from the harms of vaping and unhealthy food brand advertising, 

  • Establish pilots and/or fund nationally recognised health programs including SunSmart and Quit Victoria,

  • Scrutinise government health policy, and more. 

You deserve effective health services that have the freedom to take health seriously.

We strongly encourage you to write your own message! This is much more impactful! Draw on your own lived experience of tobacco, junk food, walking school bus etc. To paint a picture of the healthy world you want to see that is only possible if VicHealth remains independent!

For 40 years VicHealth has been keeping Victorians healthy. We know that without proper investment in health prevention, life expectancy decreases and ambulance and hospital demand skyrockets.

Every dollar spent on preventative health saves $14.30 in future health costs. Which is why I wish for VicHealth to remain an independent foundation that has the freedom to take my health seriously.

The decision to absorb VicHealth into the Department of Health means the end of VicHealth as we know it and it will lead to poorer health outcomes for Victorians. 

VicHealth’s independent decision-making has allowed it to:

  • Champion life-saving tobacco control reforms, 

  • Be a world leader in protecting young people from the harms of vaping and unhealthy food brand advertising

  • Establish pilots and/or fund nationally recognised health programs

  • Scrutinise government health policy, and more

Without its independence many health initiatives would never see the light of day.

We live longer and spend less because of VicHealth. Reverse this disastrous decision. Keep VicHealth independent.

Do Gooder (the advocacy platform powering this online action) processes personal information from you that you enter on this form so that we can provide the functions and related services to you and The Campaigner (the organisation responsible for this online action) for their legitimate purposes, including possibly exporting it to other systems, and to effectively respond to enquiries and communications related to those services.
